Ben began his career with Bauknight Pietras & Stormer in 2005 and was named a shareholder in 2019. He brings more than 15 years of experience in tax compliance and planning services for individuals, corporations, and partnerships to the firm and its leadership team.

Ben has extensive experience in a growing industry niche: taxation of captive property and casualty insurance companies. He is the lead tax professional on BPS' Captive Insurance Team. Ben has successfully consulted on the formation of new captive insurance companies, defended IRS examinations regarding their status as an insurance company for federal income tax purposes and submitted private letter ruling requests to the IRS. Ben is highly sought after among companies considering starting their own captive insurance companies as well as a resource for industry professionals who need expert tax advice on this niche area of insurance.

“Captive insurance companies are most often used by large corporations to lower their insurance costs. However, small, closely held companies can also take advantage of the tax and business benefits of setting up their own captive. I welcome discussions with companies that want to explore setting up a captive. BPS is nationally recognized in this specialty area and will guide you through IRS and case law requirements.”

Ben also serves on the BPS Telecommunications team. In addition to corporate income tax issues, he has experience in calculating tax and fees specific to the telecommunications industry such as Universal Service Fund, Regulatory Fees, 911, state and local sales tax, and municipal fees. He has advised established telecommunications companies in North Carolina and South Carolina, startup wireless companies in South Carolina, and has researched the applicability of sales tax in other states such as New Mexico and Utah.

He also advises individuals, corporations, and partnerships on tax planning and compliance, critical areas given significant changes to the federal tax code in 2018.

“The federal tax reform legislation passed in 2018 continues to impact the tax liability of businesses and individuals. No matter your tax situation, you can count on BPS to advise you on the implications and plan appropriately to maximize your individual and business tax strategies.”

Ben earned a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences from Louisiana State University. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants, South Carolina Captive Insurance Association, and The Friendly Society Restored.

After hours – and after tax season - Ben enjoys spending time with his wife Kara, their two children and two dogs. He’s an enthusiastic LSU football fan and has an above-average interest in personal fitness, but a below-average golf game.
